This is a quilt I made a couple summers ago. Larry's nephew loves history and Americana. He got engaged this spring with plans to marry next summer. I'd like to make another one of these quilts for a wedding gift.

On top of the shelf is a Christmas sampler Audrey stitched and gave to me. I keep it out all year; I love this piece.

Also on the shelf is a hand-carved wooden man and woman. Cousin Cathy's mom bought this set in Germany years ago and gave it to my mom. I can remember Mom having these in her kitchen when we lived on the farm. I couldn't bear the thought of selling them when we divided Mom's things, so I took them.

Also on the shelf is a child's slate that someone wrote "Randy loves the ballet." There is an auction house about three miles down the road from our place, and our son-in-law Randy worked there parttime for awhile before he and Jenny marrried. We know the auctioneers; they know us, and everyone knew that Randy and Jenny were an item. A few months earlier, Jenny had talked Randy into going to the Nutcracker ballet. The auctioneers teased him endlessly about that. When this slate came up for sale, I told Jenny that I wanted to buy it. Before the bidding started, the auctioneer said "Wait, I think there's something written on that slate. Turn it around." The runner turned the slate around and read "Randy loves the ballet." The auctioneers roared; Randy's face turned red, and we all had a good laugh over that one. I decided I would pay whatever it took so that I could have that slate. I have never erased it, and I never will.
