Red Schoolhouse Quilt

This is one of my favorite quilts. Although I love a scrappy quilt, I also love two color quilts; and red is my favorite color.

When my parents moved to assisted living nine years ago, I brought Mom's quilt books and fabrics to my house. Something she said before she got sick led me to believe she wanted to make a quilt for each of her grandchildren. But she didn't. So I did.

I made six lap quilts; I still have one that needs to be quilted for my nephew. And I made this schoolhouse quilt for myself. I scrap pieced the back with two different fabrics. One fabric is printed with the Pledge of Allegiance, and the other print is handwriting. Do you remember seeing these handwriting charts when you were in elementary school?

OH I do remember handwriting charts.... Always made a's in school but c's in handwriting. Always going 90 to nothing and forgetting about neatness. Probably where I get in my quilting too. Lucky Nephew.

I definitely do remember those handwriting charts. Love the quilt - two color quilts have a charm all of their own.

Oh yes I remember my hand writing tablet...wish I still had it!
Love the quilt and wish that I was that patient...I've started one and have yet to pick it back up again....maybe one day!
Thanks for the visit to my blog and yes I will soon be sharing my crafty projects which I will be selling at the bazaar in Nov.
Thanks again! :)

I remember the charts, and tried so hard to make the letters just as we were instructed...didn't quite succeed! Love the "schoolhouse quilt", thank you for sharing this very meaningful blog entry with us! Have a wonderful weekend!

Ah yes.. I certainly remember those handwriting charts! What a neat idea for a quilt back too. Love that schoolhouse quilt! Mary, if you were my neighbor I would offer my limited knowledge of flowers & gardening in exchange for some quilting lessons (and advice on being "neat and tidy", which I also need.. hehe). Oh if we could just choose our neighbors :) Have a great weekend. -Tammy

Mary that almost brought tears to my eyes when I was reading that you finished what your mom had wanted to start. You knew what was in her heart and carried it out. That says a LOT about the person you are. LOVE the schoolhouse quilt and I'd say those fabric backs couldn't be more perfect!!! AWESOME job ~ ♥

I remember those handwriting charts so well. I tried and tried to write like that, but never quite mastered it perfectly.

Great quilts.
