A couple veterans were collecting in the lobby of the grocery store over the weekend. Because I do a lot of shopping with my debit card, I was horrified when I saw I had one penny in my wallet. I gave it to them and apologized. The next visit to the store I was better prepared. But you know, if everyone gave even a few cents, think how much it would add up to help our veterans assistance programs.

Memorial Day has always been important to me because of what it stands for. When my dad passed away, my aunt (his sister) told me that she felt Dad would want a military funeral. I was one step ahead of her and had already done pre-arrangements. I had never attended a military burial; it was quite moving. One picture I will always remember is that of Dad's friend Roger. They were a couple of bad apples together! But I remember Roger saluting my dad's flag-draped coffin. It still brings tears to my eyes.

We've all heard it said, but it does mean so much - please remember to thank a vet. And please throw a few coins into the cans when they are collecting. Thank you.

Thank you Mary for this blog entry, it is very meaningful to think about! You are right if each of us would share a penny it would help in even a small way, but add up to being HUGE for someone!

Moving tribute to your Dad, thank you for sharing what must be emotional thoughts by you!
